A week ago I was in Niamey, Niger, driving through a city in the midst of rioting, looting, burning and destruction -- all over rights, perceptions, assumptions, fear, misinformation, and ideology. Interestingly, one hour before, I was out of the city in the sahel, observing a group of West African giraffes eating their breakfast. The good earth and the contrasting self-centredness of human beings -- both the self-centred humanists of France who continue to provoke (as their right?) destruction and the self-centred ideologues of a major world religion who perpetrate destruction. Leaving real human beings broken and distraught.
